Simak Keramika: ten campaigns, 99.89 percent deliverability

  1. Starting point

A store with a catalog in Slovenian, Croatian and Italian, and a customer base across all three.

  2. What we did

Campaigns by language segment on a steady rhythm: seven in June, ten in July. Every month, clicks and opens compared segment by segment.

  3. Result

Deliverability of 99.89 percent with not one spam complaint. Clicks in the Slovenian segment rose 38 percent on the month before, and opens in the Italian segment went from 11.20 to 13.02 percent.

You have a list, but no revenue from it

Four sentences we hear almost every week

It is rarely that somebody wants to send more email. It is nearly always a list that has produced nothing for months.

01

We have a list and it brings nothing

We have been collecting addresses for years. We send now and then, there is almost no response, and we cannot even count how many orders came from it.

02

We write when we remember to

There is no plan. When there is time we send, when there is not, three months pass. Meanwhile the customer forgets us and goes elsewhere.

03

We do not know who we are allowed to email

The addresses came from all over: forms, giveaways, purchases. Nobody knows who gave consent or what that means under GDPR.

04

We see opens, we do not see orders

The tool shows percentages that look good. How much money the email actually brought in, nobody can say.

If one of those sounds familiar, we deal with it on the intro call: fifteen minutes, no obligation.

The basics

What email marketing is

Email marketing is sending email deliberately to people who consented to it, so that they take the next step. A purchase, a repeat purchase, or an inquiry.

It differs from social media in one respect: the list of addresses is yours. Reach on Facebook or Instagram is rented and can disappear overnight when the algorithm changes. An address somebody gave you stays yours until they unsubscribe.

In practice, email marketing is not one newsletter a month but a handful of flows that fire automatically on what one person does. A newsletter goes to everyone at once and misses most of them, because it has no reason to be written. A flow has that reason, because it knows what the buyer just did.

It works best once you already have traffic. If you do not, the things that come first are SEO and digital marketing, otherwise the email has nobody to write to.

What we build

Four flows that work so you do not have to

A newsletter goes to everyone at once and misses most of them, because it has no reason to be written. A flow fires when somebody does something, and that is exactly why it knows what to say.

We connect them to the online store, so the email knows the product, the price and the stock. We currently run four WooCommerce stores, from 66 categories up to a catalog of 548 products in three languages.

We start with one flow, not four. Once the first runs and the revenue shows, we take on the next.

We start with one flow →
Timeline of four email flows: the welcome flow fires on sign-up, the abandoned cart on an abandoned checkout, the post-purchase email after delivery, and the win-back after six months of silence.

No buzzwords

Other agencies talk about synergy. We talk about orders.

We do not promise open rates and we do not report on them. An opened email is not a sale, and the open rate has been distorted since Apple changed how it works.

If we judge that email will not return enough at your scale, we say so before you pay. We do not send to bought lists, because they ruin deliverability even for the addresses that would like to read you.

You get the scope, the price and the deadline the same day as the call, or the next at the latest, not a week later with different numbers.

What we measure

What we measure in email marketing besides the open rate

The open rate is no longer a reliable headline metric, so we look at orders, revenue and repeat purchases. We publish a client’s results only with their permission. What we can do up front is say what we will measure for you and when it will show.

Measurement goes in before the first send. Without it there is no basis for any decision, and every conversation about success is a matter of feeling.

Why Aithena

Six reasons, including the ones that do not flatter us

First the thing people most often think about Aithena. Then what genuinely sets us apart.

01

The company is new. So what.

Aithena really is a young company and some count that against us. Kevin has 11 years of work on the web behind him and more than 50 sites and stores built. The company is new; the experience is not. We would rather say that plainly than pretend we have been here a decade.

02

The small team is deliberate.

There are five of us. It means you speak with the people who actually run and do the work, not an account manager forwarding the question. It also means we do not take on more clients than we can handle, and we say so when we are full.

03

We publish client results only with their permission.

Other agencies put their clients’ percentages on the email page. We do not, because that data belongs to the client and is not our advertising. Instead we say up front what we will measure for you and when it will show, and those measurements go to you, not only to us.

04

One party responsible, not three vendors.

Email, store and ads with one point of contact. When the abandoned cart stops sending, there is no question of whether the store or the email tool is at fault, because we run both. It is also the most common reason people call us.

05

We say what we do not recommend.

If we judge that email will not return enough at your scale, we say so before the proposal, not after three months of invoices. The same goes for bought lists and for flows that make no sense in your field.

06

A proposal in a day, not in a week.

You get the scope, the price and the deadline the same day as the call, or the next at the latest. No week of silence, and no proposal that ends up different from what was agreed on the phone.

Aithena helped me with the online store and the advertising. They showed clearly what supports sales, what needs improving, and how to present the products to the market.

From the list to the order

Five steps from the list to the first order

  1. 1

    Reviewing the list

We look at where the addresses came from, how many are still alive and whether you are allowed to write to them. It is the one step that cannot be skipped.

  2. 2

    Planning the flows

We decide which flow pays off soonest for you. We start with one, not four at once.

  3. 3

    Build and connect

We build the flow in the tool and connect it to the store so it knows the product, the price and the stock. We set up consent and unsubscribe.

  4. 4

    A live test

We release it to a small part of the list and check deliverability before it reaches every address.

  5. 5

    Measure, then the next one

Once the first runs and the revenue shows, we take on the next. Whatever brought nothing gets switched off, and we tell you.

You receive an itemized proposal the same day as the intro call, or the next at the latest.

What you receive

After the work you have flows whose effect on orders you can measure.

Email is not a newsletter once a month. It is a sequence of messages that reaches the buyer when the decision is close.

01

Immediately

The list and the permissions reviewed

We check who you are allowed to write to and build the flow that fires on what a buyer does.

02

During the work

Fit

Let us also say when it is not worth it

We would rather tell you openly when a service is not right for you than have you spend money on something that will not work.

Good fit

Worth doing if

  • you have a subscriber list or returning buyers
  • you sell products that repeat or complement each other
  • you want revenue measured to the order, not just to the open

Wrong timing

Wait if

  • you have no list and do not intend to build one
  • you cannot show you have permission to send
  • you expect a result from a single message

Questions

Short and clear answers

Including the ones whose answer is not pleasant. If we judge it is not worth it for you, we say so before you pay.

Email marketing is sending email deliberately to people who consented to it, so that they take the next step. In practice it is not one newsletter a month but a handful of flows that fire automatically on what one person does: on sign-up, on an abandoned cart, after delivery, and after a long stretch of silence. It differs from social media in that the list of addresses is yours, while reach on social is rented and can vanish when the algorithm changes.

Reviewing the list and the legal basis, planning the flows, writing the copy, building it in the tool, connecting it to the store so the email knows the product and the price, setting up consent and unsubscribe, testing deliverability, and measuring to the order. We do not just send email; we build a system that sends itself and can be traced. If there is anything in there we cannot do better than you, we say so and do not charge for it.

When all you need is copy for a few emails, a freelancer is often cheaper and that is what we suggest. We are worth hiring when the email has to talk to the store, when consent has to satisfy GDPR, and when somebody has to be answerable for the measurement showing orders rather than opens. With us the email, the store and the ads sit with one point of contact, so nothing gets passed along.

The scope sets the price: how many flows we build, whether the store has to be connected, and whether the list needs cleaning. After the intro call you receive an itemized proposal the same or the next day, so you know where you stand before paying anything. Prices for the other services are published in the price list. Email is quoted by scope, because a catalog of 548 products and a boutique range are not comparable. Indicative prices for every service are published on the price list.

Fewer than you think. At a few hundred addresses the welcome flow and the abandoned cart already pay for themselves, because they fire on what one person does rather than on a date. With a small list it takes longer for the difference to be reliable, and we say so up front so you are not expecting a result in the first week.

Not automatically. GDPR requires a legal basis, and for recipients in the US, CAN-SPAM applies as well. Existing customers may, under conditions, be emailed about similar goods; new addresses may not, without consent. Before the first send we always review where the addresses came from, because it is the one step that cannot be fixed retroactively.

We advise against it and we do not do it. Beyond the legal risk, bought lists ruin deliverability even for the addresses that would like to read you. Once the mailbox providers flag your domain, repairing the sender reputation is slow and expensive.

Orders. The open rate has been distorted since Apple changed how it works, and an opened email is not a sale anyway. We set the measurement up so you can see how many orders came out of which flow, and what the revenue per recipient is.

Yes. We currently run four WooCommerce stores, from 66 categories up to a catalog of 548 products in three languages. Email that knows the product, the price and the stock behaves differently from email that does not.

Email marketing is messages going out to your customers and buyers: news, sales flows, abandoned carts. Email automation sorts out your incoming business mailbox: it triages messages and drafts replies. The first one sells; the second one saves hours of replying.
