What we hear about an existing logo

Four sentences we hear almost every week

Hardly anyone calls because they want a new logo. They call because the one they have causes trouble every time they need it.

01

We have a logo and no files

The mark exists as one JPG from 2018. There is nothing for print or for a dark background, so every vendor improvises it again.

02

Every document looks different

The quote, the business card and the Instagram post use three different typefaces and three shades of blue.

03

It does not set us apart

Our mark could belong to anyone in the industry. Nobody remembers us by it.

04

It falls apart at small sizes

In a profile picture or on a pen you cannot see a thing. There is no small-size variant.

If one of those sounds familiar, we deal with it on the intro call: fifteen minutes, no obligation.

How a brand is made

Logo and identity design built on a clear brand story

Designing a logo starts from understanding the positioning, the audience and the character of the company. The identity then ties the mark, the colors, the typography and the usage rules into a system your team can actually use.

The basics

What logo design really is

Designing a logo is not drawing a symbol, it is deciding what people should recognize you by. The mark is the last step, not the first.

Before anything is drawn it has to be clear who the company speaks to and how it differs. A logo made without that is decoration. It can be attractive and say nothing, and a year later it has to be replaced again.

A logo almost never stands alone. It needs a variant for small sizes, for dark backgrounds, for print and for social media. If those do not exist from the start, everyone who needs a file improvises one later and the brand splits into five versions of itself.

So alongside the mark you get the colors, the typeface and the usage rules. That is the part that makes your Instagram post two years from now still look like yours.

What a handsome mark does not do

A handsome mark by itself sells nothing

A logo does not convince a buyer. The offer and the experience do that. The mark is what they remember you by once they have decided, and what separates you from the rest.

So before drawing we ask who the company speaks to and how it differs. A mark made without that is decoration, and a year later it has to be replaced again.

When we judge you would be better served by refreshing the mark you have rather than a new one, we say so. A refresh is often cheaper and keeps the recognition you have already built.

From the conversation to the brand guide

Four steps from the conversation to a usage guide

  1. 1

    Understanding the brand

Who you speak to, how you differ and where the identity will be used. Without that, every concept is guesswork.

  2. 2

    A few directions

We show a few genuinely different directions, not twenty versions of one. Twenty concepts means nobody set a direction.

  3. 3

    Developing the chosen one

The chosen direction is developed all the way: variants for small sizes, for dark backgrounds, for print and for social.

  4. 4

    Brand guide and handover

You get every file and a guide with the usage rules, so that two years from now your post still looks like yours.

You receive an itemized proposal the same day as the intro call, or the next at the latest.

What you receive

What a brand identity contains

A brand identity is not a logo. The logo is one part of it, alongside the colors, the typeface, a variant for every use and the rules by which all of it is applied.

The most common mistake is producing only the mark. Six months later somebody needs a print file, somebody else one for a dark background, a third for a profile picture. Because those variants do not exist, each person improvises and the brand splits into five versions of itself.

Which is why our design work never stops at the mark. Whatever we make for a brand has to work on a business card, on packaging, on the website and in an ad, otherwise the decision has to be made again every time. So an identity is never one file here. It is a set of files and rules you can hand to anyone, including a vendor who has never spoken to us.

What you get at handover

  • The mark in every varianthorizontal, stacked, small
  • Colors and typefaceexact values for screen and print
  • Files for every usevector and raster
  • A usage guideso the identity still holds a year later

Why Aithena

Four reasons, and the first is that you get the source files

A logo is not a picture. It is the files, the rules and the variants you will need three years from now.

01

You get the source files, not just a PNG.

Vector files, variants for light and dark backgrounds, horizontal and stacked lockups, and the colors in every notation. Without that, every later vendor charges you to redraw it.

02

We check how the mark holds up at 18 pixels.

A logo has to work on a sign and in a browser tab. A mark that turns into a smudge at small size is not finished, however good it looks in the presentation.

03

We do not pile up concepts.

We show fewer concepts and argue for each one. Thirty variants is not a choice, it is handing the decision back to the client.

04

We finish the brand, not just the mark.

Basic usage rules, typefaces and colors are part of the job. A logo without rules breaks into ten versions within six months.

On the intro call we look at everywhere the mark will be used and say what you need and what you do not.

What you receive

After the work you have files and rules, not just a picture.

A logo with no source files and no usage rules causes the same confusion in print and online, again and again.

01

Immediately

A conversation about the brand’s character

We settle what the mark has to convey and everywhere it will be used.

02

During the work

Concepts and revisions

You see the variants in real use, on the site, in a document and in print, not only on a white background.

03

At handover

The full set of files

You receive vector and web files, the colors, the typefaces and a short set of usage rules.

Fit

Let us also say when it is not worth it

We would rather tell you openly when a service is not right for you than have you spend money on something that will not work.

Good fit

Worth doing if

  • you are building the brand fresh or refreshing it
  • you have a logo and no source files
  • the identity has to work online and in print

Wrong timing

Wait if

  • you only need a quick picture for a profile
  • you change the mark every few months
  • there are many decision-makers and nobody has the final word

Questions

Short and clear answers

Answers to the questions we hear most often before an engagement starts.

The scope can cover the logo, the color palette, the typography, the usage rules, core business materials and templates for digital channels.

The finished system usually holds a primary, a horizontal, a simplified and a single-color variant, in formats for print and for web.

We start from the brand direction, prepare design routes, develop the chosen one, and finish with the exports and the instructions.

Vector source files, variants for light and dark backgrounds, horizontal and stacked lockups, and the colors in every notation. Without that, every later vendor charges you to redraw it.

Fewer concepts, each of them argued for. Thirty variants is not a choice, it is handing the decision back to the client.

Usually one to two weeks, depending on the number of revision rounds and whether we also prepare the basic usage rules alongside the mark.

Yes. The usage rules, the typefaces and the colors can be part of the job. A logo without rules breaks into ten versions within six months.

Graphic design is billed at an hourly rate of 35 euros; the complete mark with source files and usage rules is quoted by proposal, which arrives the same or the next day after the call. Indicative prices are on the price list.

Yes. Besides the logo we design business cards, envelopes, letterheads, packaging and ads, so the identity is the same online and in print. You get the files in vector and web form together with the usage rules, so a printer or another designer can use them straight away.

Book a call

Tell us where you are and we will set up a call

The intro call takes about fifteen minutes. We look at your situation and say what is worth doing first.

You receive an itemized proposal the same or by the next business day at the latest after the call, not a week later with different numbers. If we judge that the service is not worth it for you, we say so before the proposal.

  • We reply every day, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Central European Time (3 a.m. to 3 p.m. Eastern)
  • No lock-in and no subscription to talk
  • If we cannot help you, we tell you right away
